Erin Schanen The Impatient Gardener, Perennial Alliums, 75

My shy new “Summer Beauty” Alliums. I expect more exuberance next season.

4 year old Allium ‘Millenium’ are now well behaved gangbusters.

Plant of the Week:

Allium ‘Millenium’

… or really any of the popular new perennial Alliums. If the combination of chives and lollipops intrigues you, this could be a plant for you to grow.

Its perks…

  • Deer resistant

  • Bunny resistant

  • Drought resistant

  • Attracts pollinators

  • Cute as a lollipop!

There’s always action on this plant.

Painting and Plant Pairing

from

Karen Blair

You heard me mention my friend Karen Blair on the pod this week. Karen is a Charlottesville based painter whose work I know you would love. She is known for her joyous use of color and for exuberant mark-making. Her own garden and those of friends inspire the flowers and trees also prevalent in her paintings.

I am so excited to start this partnership with Karen, and each week I will feature here one of her paintings with a corresponding garden photo! Follow this link to see more of her paintings.

And follow her on Instagram here.

The Impatient Gardener

Erin and I chatted way back in May when the large refrigerator she lives next to, which most people call Lake Michigan, was having its way with her spring garden. Her description made it sound like my early March garden.

But the nice thing about cool spring weather and a slow developing season is that when it gets going, it REALLY gets going.

Erin and her pal Roy Diblik put together a new garden at her place with lots of natives and grasses.

Here’s a video tour— in late July, 3 months after planting.

3 months after planting all the new little plants are looking good.

The Achillea that Erin thought she wasn’t fond of and two type of Stachys in the background— ‘Hummelo’ is darker and ‘Summer Crush’ is the light one. .

Planting Day!

In other Impatient Gardener news, the BIG planter is looking lovely and the banana is the perfect thriller.

Eileed DeCamp’s peonies. Not perfect, but at least they opened!
